| The
heavily populated area immediately surrounding Vancouver is known as the
Lower Mainland. Most people see the region as something to get through on
the way to somewhere else. We won't quibble with this, but there are a few
places to break up the trip and once into the Fraser Canyon, BC's legendary
topography takes over. |
Hope
and the Othello Tunnels
 |
At
the small town of Hope, 150 km from Vancouver, the road east splits. The
Trans Canada Hwy follows the Goldrush Trail north up the Fraser River Valley
towards Cache Creek. As the road follows the river, which winds and twists
through the canyon, there are many points of interests and viewing areas.
Hope :
There's not much in Hope itself but it's a good access
point for the Fraser river Canyon and Southern BC. Several lakes and more
than a dozen provincial parks are close by. If you have a bit of time, the
Othello Tunnels, 15 minutes by car from Hope, is worth the trip. Situated
in the Coquihalla Canyon Recreation Area and running alongside the river
of the same name, a series of tunnels were cut for a railway line between
1911 and 1919. |
It's
an interesting hour stroll along the gorge and unique enough to have been
used in several movies including First Blood, 'Rambo' movie.
South-east of town, a 15 minutes drive on the Crowsnest Hwy, are the remains
of the infamous 'Hope slide'. In 1965 four people were killed when a small
earthquake caused part of a mountain to crumble. |

Rambo
filmed here - First Blood :
In the fall of 1981 the District of Hope, BC, was transformed
by Hollywood set designers to become the "big screen birthplace"
of John Rambo.
Because the filming of First Blood was primarily in the
Hope area, the Hope and Distric Chamber of Commerce has developed a walking
and driving tour of some of the film's key locations. |
| Most
of these sites are in Hope's downtown core and make for a colorful Hollywood
experienced by foot. The sites that are farther out are easily accessed
by car and are perhaps the best part of the Rambo adventure. |
