Not so long ago, Alberta was a vast, sparsely inhabited wilderness. Today it has two of the largest cities in Canada - Edmonton and Calgary. Its huge wheat farms, cattle ranches and rich deposits of minerals and fossil fuels are the basis of its wealth.

Alberta, the most westerly of the prairie provinces, is bordered in the north by the Northwest Territories, in the east by Sasketchewan, in the south by Montana and in the west by British Columbia. The east is the continuation of the Canadians Prairies. The northern area is filled with rivers, lakes and forest; it's a rugged and largely inaccessible region, especially in the north east. The south-western edge of the province rises from foothills into the Rockies Mountains, while much of the rest of the south is dry and flat with badlands in some areas.
